I suggest you ...

Allow a full-screen chat channel

You should be able to go full-screen with the chat - and that way create a narrow browser window that can stay open at all times on your screen.

I've found that in the desktop app you can go to the application Flowdock menu (not sure what it will be called on Windows) and choose User Agent > iPhone then you get the narrow iPhone version of flowdock which has chat full screen, etc. Not idea, I still prefer the ability to click a button to switch between 1 or 2 column view. :)

Oh, I forgot to mention, not being able to have 1 column view has been a big gripe with our team (in fact, the biggest gripe I've heard so far with the exception of gravartars).

The main basis for the complaints is that people want a narrower desktop app window - they want a 1 column view allowing them to focus on one specific area of the flow (eg. chat, influx, search, etc) and they want to be able to resize the window to be narrower.

On returning to 2 column view, they'd expect the desktop app window to go wider. Having the window remember the widths set for 1 col and 2 col views, then return to those width depending on the view shown, would be good too.

Another option would be to automatically switch to 1 column view if the user resizes the app window to a width where there's not enough room for 2 columns.

Yeesssss! We need to be able to collapse the left portion of the screen so the chat area has more width. In particular we need to be able to reduce the width of the desktop app to something more like the width we use for our IM and twitter clients = eats less screen space.

I have a possible suggestion for how this might be achieved.

Currently the dashboard icon (flowdock logo) appears at the top of the icon bar on the left. Move it down to where the influx icon is (and obviously move all the other icons down accordingly). Then, where the dashboard icon used to appear, have a button that toggles 2 column view on and off.

When 2 column view is enabled, you get chat on the right and whatever is selected on the icon bar in the left (eg. influx or search).

When 1 column view is selected, a new "chat" icon would appear in the icon bar and be selected by default, indicating that the main area is showing the chat. But I could click on any of the other icons (influx, etc) to replace the main area with the associated feature - so I could have my 1 column view just showing influx and any new chat messages would result in a number badge appearing on the chat icon to let me know stuff is happening in chat, etc.

I think this would be a really clean and simple way to handle these requirements. It would also work well for flows where we're primarily interested in the influx - eg. just so we have a scrolling news feed pulled from twitter, confluence, email, etc.

Maybe allow us to completely hide the dashboard/influx/flowser screen and leave just the icon bar?
